about

These tunes were all created for educational purposes for my teaching at music camps. At ResoSummit in Nashville and at the Acoustic Blues Workshop in Port Townsend WA, I've taught classes on how to use the dobro in blues and jazz settings to help folks move beyond a bluegrass or country orientation with which the dobro is often tagged. These are demos I made to illustrate my points. I realized, immodestly, there's some pretty nice playing here but I would never release it as an album because it's all dobro all the time. Who would want to hear that besides dobro players and dobro nerds? So I'm giving it away to those of you that play the dobro or love to hear the dobro. You can put a zero in the payment field. I hope you enjoy it. If you do, drop me an email at orville@orvillejohnson.com and let me know. Thanks...oj

A lot of this is me playing multiple parts, programming drums and rhythms, and using backing tracks, but I am joined in places by John Miller-guitar, Mark Graham-harmonica, Jeff Busch-percussion, and Keith Lowe-bass.

about

Orville Johnson Seattle, Washington

Orville Johnson was raised in the Illinois heartland. He acquired his love of singing as a youth in the fundamentalist Pentecostal church he attended and, when he later began playing guitar and dobro, responded to the roots music that surrounded him by learning to play the blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, and country music that are all part of the mosaic that characterizes his own mongrel music. ... more
