about

This is the third album I began during the pandemic. After Dream Your Own Dream (mostly original tunes), and A Better World Somewhere (all covers), I wanted to do something that featured my dobro playing. I have a couple of other albums focused on dobro but haven't done one for several years.

This isn't a "bluegrass" album. I know a lot of folks identify the dobro with bluegrass music, but it's never been that for me. I look at the dobro as a singing voice, unbound by any genre. Most of my playing falls more into a blues/jazz/funk place. I did include one song written by the King of bluegrass dobro, Josh Graves, because I love him, but the rest of the disc leans elsewhere.

There are five original instrumental tunes, covers of some of my favorite composers and musicians- Billy Strayhorn, Bill Frisell, Jimmie Rogers, Billie Holiday, Luiz Bonfá, and a setting I wrote for a beautiful poem by Langston Hughes, Daybreak in Alabama. Many thanks to my friend Betty Wheeler for pointing out that poem to me.

I sing on Daybreak in Alabama, Manhã de Carnaval, Somebody's on My Mind, and Treasures Untold.

Special Thanks to • Parry Marston • Garey Shelton • Scott Schafer • David Lange • Richard Russell • The Twirling Mickies • Mike Auldridge • all the fine musicians that participated

about

Orville Johnson Seattle, Washington

Orville Johnson was raised in the Illinois heartland. He acquired his love of singing as a youth in the fundamentalist Pentecostal church he attended and, when he later began playing guitar and dobro, responded to the roots music that surrounded him by learning to play the blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, and country music that are all part of the mosaic that characterizes his own mongrel music. ... more
