about

Originally released in 2014

I did this album with my friend Casey MacGill. We recorded and mixed it at my home studio. We came up with the idea when we were chatting about music in between sets at a gig we were playing. Casey told me he had always dreamed of doing an album of "Hapa-Haole" music, as this style is usually referred to. He even had the songs picked out. Concurrently, I had received a gorgeous replica of a 1930s Roy Smeck Hawaiian Guitar made by my friends at the Rayco company, the perfect guitar for the Hawaiian slide sound the music would demand. It seemed to me like the universe had aligned and I suggested we get to work on the album at my house. Over a few months we pulled it together with the help of Matt Weiner playing bass on a few of the songs and Ross Nyberg doing a nice mastering job.

Casey sings all the tunes beautifully and I had a ball recording the music and playing my interpretation of Hawaiian steel guitar on all the tunes. If you'd like to hear more of what Casey is doing, go here...

Orville Johnson Seattle, Washington

Orville Johnson was raised in the Illinois heartland. He acquired his love of singing as a youth in the fundamentalist Pentecostal church he attended and, when he later began playing guitar and dobro, responded to the roots music that surrounded him by learning to play the blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, and country music that are all part of the mosaic that characterizes his own mongrel music. ... more
