about

This is an album made by three friends taking an opportunity to get together and play the music they love. Woody is a co-founder of the International Guitar Seminar, an outstanding music workshop that endured for 7 years. I was honored to be a teacher for the entire run and also to be a colleague of John Cephas there and at several other music camps. We enjoyed many jam sessions, played one weekend long gig as a trio (in Las Vegas, hence the title) and decided to document our musical fun here. We dedicate this recording to the memory of blues giant John Cephas and to the memory of our friend Robert Tilling who was with us at every IGS workshop, and was a great writer, watercolor artist, teacher, musician, and a virtuoso human being. He wrote the liner notes for the album. Here they are...

"During a very late evening last June I listened to John, Woody, and Orville jamming with a small group of enthralled guitar students. The trio were together for the International Guitar Seminars workshop held at the historic Columbia University in New York City. All three musicians were at their most creative and relaxed, enjoying every moment of each other's company-just the pure joy of spontaneously playing music together and having a good time. The atmosphere was particularly magical that night as each solo weaved seamlessly into the next and they improvised through song after song. I sat captivated, listening into the wee hours to a very special gathering of three gentlemen of the blues. I thought about how lucky I was to be in the right place at the right time.

A short while after the New York session the group was brought together by TV producer Bruce Lamb to play a show in Las Vegas-their first professional engagement as a trio. These sessions recorded in Lafayette NJ and Seattle WA shortly thereafter capture the intensity, spontaneity, and fun they had during their stint in Nevada. For me, it also brings back that late night in New York City. Now we can all be in the right place at the right time-Robert Tilling"

Orville Johnson Seattle, Washington

Orville Johnson was raised in the Illinois heartland. He acquired his love of singing as a youth in the fundamentalist Pentecostal church he attended and, when he later began playing guitar and dobro, responded to the roots music that surrounded him by learning to play the blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, and country music that are all part of the mosaic that characterizes his own mongrel music. ... more
